Just finished this one last night in time for the Wednesday post. I missed last week because of personal life events going on with my children. This is one of the Redwork Hexagon Embroidery designs.

And here are all the finished ones, so far. Sorry it's a little blurry.

I think the next step is to get some of those white ones with the feather stitched vine ready to put in between. The way they are on the wall is one possible setting, but it isn't the original idea I had, so we'll see what happens.

My January hexies

I have done a lot of hexies this month. My goals I put here, and I've finished a lot more than that.

My first project is La Passion. One hundred hexies joined, and I've just passed 1800. You can read more about it here.

I have two zigzag projects. I managed to join three blocks on this one.

My other zigzag is pink, and this is how it has grown this month, 5 blocks joined.

Then I started a BOM, and have finished the first block, the snowflake. You can read more about it and find links here.

I also found my mini hexies in an envelope, and made two new flowers for this grandmothers mini garden. The hexies are 1/4", and I've passed 3000 of them.

As if this wasn't enough, I found a new blog with these hexies. And I certainly had to try it. Please find a tutorial at Karen H.

Do you think I can keep up this speed every month? I'll try, and report in a month.

Hexagons and Embroidery Mix It Up Again!

I had not thought about this before, probably because I never applique my hexagons, or haven't yet. Faeries and Fibres is running a Mystery QAL with some great ideas.

SoupconQAL

It involves hexagons and embellishment. In part 2 of 6, which I linked, she talks about embroidery and applique with the star flower designs. They are very interesting, and she links, almost at the bottom of the embroidery part, a page of her ideas for the embroidery.

RHE Weeds Finish

After I did all that planning last week on the 3/4" hexagon project, I couldn't find the black I've been using. It's important to use that same one, because it's a polished cotton - shiny on the right side - and I don't want to mix in others.

It seems a cleaning-and-organization session is called for, and I think that will be my Get It Done and Lovely Finish projects for February! Things are way out of hand in there, and overflowing to adjoining rooms!

Instead, I finished the Weeds design from the RHE SAL last year. These are 2 inch hexagons. A few more to go, and then the white setting rows.

A Little Advancement

Well, I got tried of making petals so I made another flower and I put all my flowers up on the design wall........I'm gonna need more - much more......little by little!!  And I think I'll have to make a decision whether to have one or two rounds of background around the flowers

Susan: Wednesday Report

It's Wednesday! Bet you thought I forgot I said I'd post every Wednesday. No, just a busy day.

Before I decided what to do next, I thought I should lay out one of the projects and see where I need to go with it. I chose the hexagon project with the 3/4" sides. I love this size. I tried the 1/2" and those are WAY too small for my taste. Other sizes are good, and I work with them, too, but the 3/4" is my favorite one.

This project was started in the summer of 1988 when I was on a trip with my sister. I can't recall now why I picked hexagons, except I needed something to do as we drove across the state of Texas - from El Paso almost all the way to the Red River, well past Dallas. If you've never made that trip, it's a really long way and I don't suggest doing it in one day. I've done it many times in my life, usually in one day! Did I mention it's long?

I was trying to recall which of these was the very first one. It wasn't the red one with the red-ticking stripe and the cow heads, but I remember buying that fabric on the way home on that trip, in a quilt shop that was in Carlsbad, NM. The blue one in the upper left and the brown one on the lower left came from a friend in Germany, probably sent around 1998. There are two in here made from fabric I used in a friend's baby quilt for her second child, and that child is probably in college now ... as a senior. A lot of them were pieced watching TV with Paul, or in the passenger seat driving down the road, pulling the fifth wheel. There will be one or two that I've put together with pieces my best friend, Fran, had basted before she died. This piece has a lot of meaning to me, as you can imagine.

Once upon a time, I thought I'd make an entire quilt. Now, I think not. I think what you see will be the finished size. It's tempting to make it into a hexagon and hang it on the wall, but really, wouldn't the hanging of that be a pain in the heinegeplatz? So I think it will be this and be a long table runner. I guess I could make it a table cloth size for my round table .... You can't tell, because I cropped it, but it's at the foot of my queen-sized bed and it's almost that wide. If I talk about making it bigger, sit me down for a serious talk!

I need to attach a few of the ones you see on the floor, make three more white ones and two more colored ones, and a whole lot of black triangles. Hmmm. This looks like a lot of work to go!

Thanks for Letting Me Join in on the FUN!!!

Hello, my name is Mariella and I live in Cancun, Mexico.  I have been quilting over 10 ten years and have been following this blog for some time.  Last summer I started making hexagons to have a project that didn't require much equipment.  I belong to a quilt group here in Cancun and this type of sewing is easy to carry to our twice weekly meetings and I always have something ready to take without loads of planning and toting! Plus in the evenings I can work on my hexagons while sitting and watching TV with my husband.  I've really embraced the entire process.  I guess there's nothing more to do than show photos of what I've come up with so far......Oh and thanks for letting me join in on the fun!!

This is just a little diamond I made.  It was my very first foray into English Paper Piecing.  It's now waiting for further inspiration to 'become' something more......I was simply using up some scrap fabric and thinking of possibilities.

This is playing with petals - nothing is sewn together.  But I was getting an idea for Flowers on a green background.

These are just a bunch of flowers that I'd sewn together just getting a feel and maybe some ideas - I didn't sew together the flowers - just laid them next to each other to see if they might like each other.....

Then I was wondering what the flowers would look like with some neutral hexagon separations.....just playing...no big plans to do anything further here ..... YET......

NOW I have an idea......and it's going to be something like this.....with DARK flowers and LIGHT GREEN background in the upper left hand counter graduating into MEDIUM flowers and MEDIUM GREEN background in the middle and then running on into LIGHT flowers and DARK GREEN background down in the lower right hand corner ......at the time I pinned these 'petals' into the cardboard I didn't yet have very many hexagons.....but I've been working on accumulating more.....

I'm really leaning about value!!!  and I'm learning that I need more green fabric.....awwww drats!!!

and I've started sewing together some flowers with some background green.  All these green hexagons came out of my "light green" hexagon box....you can see the variety of value in those hexagons....

I will be making even more divisions from just LIGHT, MEDIUM AND DARK in the future.

Well that's where I am in my Hexagon Mania!!!

and thanks again for letting me join!!

2014 Goals

This year I have decided to write a post here every month to tell how these projects are growing.

First I have my La Passion. I'm hoping to sew at least 100 hexies to this every month. A long way to go before this from Grit, who made the pattern. You can also follow my progress here.

The next is this half hexagon quilt. I plan to sew at least 3 block to it every month.

Also a half hexie project, but with different colours and way of joining the pieces. Hope to join 5 blocks to it each month. You can read more about the two last projects here.

So now it's up to me to show you that I can do it. Look for an update in a month's time.

2014 Goals

If you have plans for your hexagons in 2014, please share those with us!

My goal is to actually get time to MAKE some. That's two part. First project is to finish my own redwork hexagon project from 2013. The second is to work on my 3/4" hexagons for the quilt I started in 1987 or 88. About time, don't you think?

To accomplish these goals, I'm going to participate in One Flower Wednesday I will also post every Wednesday here. That means Monday and Tuesdays will be my hexagon making days! I know me. It will happen the day before I need to post, but I found that being accountable for posting on Tuesdays for my CQJP projects has really kept me on track, so that's what I'm going to do for the hexagons, too.

What are your plans?
